Hello everyone
Another year is well underway, do take advantage of long
summer days and join in some of the conservation themed
activities on offer. Plenty to tempt you, from an art
exhibition to raise money for Tawharanui, to a walk in
the bush at Puhoi, the national launch of Seaweek at Goat
Island and a Hikoi at Whangateau.
Hope to see you along at some of these events, look out
for all the many Seaweek celebrations in the first week
of March.

An outstanding exhibition of
paintings, ceramics and sculpture, being sold to raise
funds for TOSSI. This is the community group that
alongside the ARC has restored Tawharanui as an open
sanctuary. Come and help the group celebrate the success
of these efforts and support this worthwhile project.
Good coffee and quality food available throughout the
exhibition.

the Seaweek theme "Fish for the Future", what
better way to learn about the fun (and rules) of
recreational fishing.
The
Take a Kid Fishing competition is run by Warkworth Lions.
Young competitors can fish from boats including the
historic scow the Jane Gifford. Return about 3pm for
prizegiving and spot prizes.
$2 entry. Tickets: Hunting and Fishing, Baxter St and

Marine Reserve Sunday March 14th
1pm meet under the big Pohutukawa
tree on the beach
The
group will explore the rocky pools of Goat Island marine
reserve and confident swimmers will be able to snorkel if
the weather is good. Learn about marine reserves.
Celebrate that this was NZ's first marine reserve, and
see how successful it has become. Guides for these are
Tony and Jenny Enderby, well-known marine advocates. All welcome, but children must be
accompanied by an adult please.
Cost: There
will be a small charge per person for snorkel hire and
guiding.
Bring: warm
clothes, sturdy shoes, flippers and/or sand shoes, togs,
towel, mask and snorkel and/or swimming goggles, a hat
and sunscreen. And drinks and snacks.

Harbour Care Society and Forest and Bird Society invite
you along for their Seaweek event. Join local experts on
a Bus Hikoi, showcasing the history,
geography and natural history of the Whangateau Harbour
and surrounds. There will be opportunities for short
walks to see points of interest so bring beach shoes,
water and lunch. Departs Whangateau Hall at 9am,
returning around 1pm to the hall.

Motions
in the Ocean!

10am - 2pm, Western Springs
Motions in
the Ocean is an upcoming Seaweek community initiative
organised by Western Springs students yes
students! Its amazing what a professional
event theyve pulled together. The local community
will be encouraged to join them on a clean up of Motions
and Meola creeks, both of which end on either side
of Meola Reef. Includes free tram ride and walk through
the zoo, plus talks from MOTAT, DOC and Waicare experts.
Youll learn about the grass carp, history of the
pumphouse and how both creeks are affecting the Waitemata
harbour.
Meet in the Western
Springs College carpark, 10am.
This is a great family event, and its
free.
Bring: Rubbish bags from home (spares
available), also gloves provided. Bring a plate for a
shared lunch. Please

Walk
in Dunn's Bush, Puhoi
Sunday March
21st
This
beautiful piece of bush, generously protected with a QEII
covenant by Val and Arthur Dunn, is now a memorial to
Arthur who died suddenly in August 2008 while doing his
bait run in this very forest. Both Arthur and Val
were long time Forest& Bird stalwarts, and have been
hugely involved with work in the Puhoi community. Join
the Mid North Forest and Bird to explore this reserve,
the 3km walk is hilly and need good footwear (ie boots).
The range of plants will surprise you, there are huge
kahikatea in the valley and an interesting rocky outcrop
covered with carmine rata.
Meet at 703 Ahuroa
Road, 7km from the Puhoi Store, at 10.00 am.
Tramping boots or similar
robust footwear is required, in parts the bush track is
fairly steep and can be slippery in wet conditions.
Bring: plenty of
drinking water; lunch, snacks to suit your needs; sunhat
and emergency wet gear + any personal medication.

great day out, very popular and suitable for families,
